I've been sharing the following slides with my clients/patients for a few years now. They have been so appreciative that I have decided to share here for the general public.
There's so much more that I hope you will come see us at Sonoma Valley Hospital Hand and Physical Therapy outpatient center so we can customize adapted techniques and equipment for you personally. Of course, if you are not a client of ours, you accept that there is a risk to applying any instruction without the guidance of a hand therapist. Checkout the slide shows below about joint safety for gardening, cooking/cleaning, and specifically, thumb safety. Come see us at Sonoma Valley Hospital's Hand and Physical Therapy Outpatient Center! Principle 1Moving to long handled tools increases leverage without increasing the work of your hands.
|
Principle 2A saw or a ratchet pruner allows your to prune the same plant material with less gripping, less effort.
|
Principle 3Even turning the tool upside down in your hand can result in a straighter, stronger wrist position for moving dirt. Try having the tool pointing out of the small finger side of your hand instead of the thumb side.

This particular slide collection was put together to help some fellow musicians protect their THUMBS. However, these principles and exercises work for anyone who wants/needs to protect their thumbs from repetitive strain, wear and tear, and prevent the onset or progress of osteoarthritis.
Some musicians develop alternate techniques, personalized methods that are not always best for the body. Come see us for an evaluation, bring your instrument, so we can help you spot any correctable movements, or risky positional derangements. |
